Not To Offend The Irish, But...

I can't stand St. Paddy's Day. I have no irish heritage and refuse to pretend I do. Green dyed beer is stupid and looks like liquified puke. I despise corned beef (actually corned anything). Milkshakes should only be thick and chocolatey, NOT green and minty (fucking gross). I make extra sure not to wear a single item of green clothing, the only exception was when I was in the Army, where EVERYTHING was OD green anyway.

So you folks of Irish heritage enjoy your "holiday," but don't expect any enthusiasm or participation from me.

  1. I'm of Irish-German extraction. Green beer is an abomination. And think choclate and mint is a good combination (not even in Girl Scout cookies).

    1. I like dark chocolate and mint. Girl Scout Thin Mints in the freezer are a favorite of mine, as are Andes Candies. It is the green mint milkshake that is an abomination.

  2. You have it kind of warped sideways. I am of at least partial (* half or thereabouts ) Irish descent, and can say that the Irish did NOT"invent" the green beer thing- that is a marketing ploy to make those with no real ties to being Irish feel included on the make believe "fun". There is NO 'St. Paddy' , his name was Patrick. IF you want some background, go online and search "The Confession of Saint Patrick" and read that. If you are more devout, go to a chapel and have some quiet meditation, prayer, listen to a sermon on your i[pod if you are so inclined. Point is, Saint Patrick had nothing to do with drunkenness, bars, green beer, or being an ass in public. A traditional meal would be not necessarily corned beef, so don't even try that as an argument- likely another American invention ( making the day a big to-do was an American invention, after all, though taking a Catholic Feast day and perverting it does not amuse me, even though I am not Catholic ). Just saying.

    1. I get it, thats why the post is titled as such. It is the American bastardization, like with Mexico's Cinco de Mayo.

  3. I think that you are jealous that you're not Irish!

Maybe you need to read "How The Irish Saved Civilization" : The Untold Story of Ireland's Heroic Role from the Fall of Rome to the Rise of Medieval Europe is a non-fiction historical book written by Thomas Cahill. Cahill argues a case for the Irish people's critical role in preserving Western Civilization from utter destruction by the Huns and the Germanic tribes.

I think you must be a Hun or one of those bent Germans.

  4. @Tim

Nope, not jealous at all. And you missed my point. I have no problem with St. Patrick (raised a Catholic) or the Irish and their contributions to Western Civilization. It is what the day is here in America. St. Valentine's Day in green without the guilt to spend $100's on your "sweetheart," but instead to dress like a booger and binge on alcohol and corned beef.

My own heritage is basically 3/4 French (by way of Canada) and 1/4 Polish with other European nationalities sprinkled in, but I am 100% American.
